Information on the Course:
Information on MA 193:
In addition to the 4 hours of credit for MA 113, the department offers one additional hour of credit for MA 193 on a pass/fail basis. You will pass MA 193 if you have at most 2 unexcused absences during MA 113 recitations and you pass MA 113. If you fail MA 113 or have 3 or more unexcused absences you will fail MA 193. Your section number for MA 193 has to equal your section number for MA 113. That means, if you drop or change sections of MA 113, please make sure to also drop or change sections of MA 193!
Grading:
See the section on Grading on the the common web page. The allocation of the 100 non-exam points will be exactly as spelled out on that page (and in the common syllabus).
Attendance and Classroom Behavior:
I will take classroom attendance about 20 times randomly throughout the semester. The teaching assistants will take attendance for recitations every time (see also MA 193). Your attendance score for the final grade will be based on the percentage of lectures you attend. See also the section Policies on the common web page.
Group Work in Recitations:
In recitation, you will practice the material of the lectures using worksheets. For the schedule of the worksheets see the
course calendar. The worksheets are available to be downloaded here. After the first two weeks you will be responsible for having the recitation worksheets with you for recitation classes. If you fail to do so, then it will be counted as an unexcused absence.

You will work in groups on the worksheets. The teaching assistant will assign groups of 3-4 students in each recitation and mix them after 2 weeks at the latest. The assignment of the groups is entirely the decision of the teaching assistant!

Advice:
If you need help with the course contact me as soon as possible. Do not wait with seeking help. It is very hard to catch up in a Math course after falling behind. I am happy to help you, but you need to let me know that you need help. See also the section Study Advice and Getting Help on the common web page, in particular the information about the Mathskeller and The Study.
