Math 661 Modern Algebra II

Course description: This is the second course in the graduate preliminary sequence in algebra. It covers Galois theory and advanced topics in ring theory.
Textbook: Dummit and Foote,
Abstract Algebra (3rd edition).
Grading: The course grade will be computed as follows:
- 30% Homework
- 50% Exams 1-3 (lowest one of the three scores dropped)
- 20% Take-home Exam
Exams: Exams 1-3 take place on the following Fridays in class:
- Exam 1: Feb 7
- Exam 2: Mar 6
- Exam 3: Apr 10
You will have from
2 pm on Friday April 17 until
1 pm on Wednesday April 22 to complete the take-home exam. Rules for the take-home exam can be found

Absences:
Senate Rules 5.2.4.2 defines the following as acceptable reasons for excused absences: (a) serious illness, (b) illness or death of family member, (c) University-related trips, (d) major religious holidays, and (e) other circumstances found to fit reasonable cause for nonattendance by the professor. As required by University rules, you must present full documentation in order to request makeup work for a valid absence. Senate Rule 5.2.4.2 states that faculty have the right to request "appropriate verification" when students claim an excused absence because of illness or death in the family. Appropriate notification of absences due to University-related trips or a major religious holiday is required no later than 7 days prior to the absence.

Students who engage in conduct that results in disruption of an instructional setting may be directed by the instructor to leave the class for the remainder of the instructional setting period.
An attitude of respect for and civility towards other students in the class and the instructor is expected at all times. If what you are doing would be inappropriate behavior during a job interview, then it is very likely inappropriate behavior in the classroom.
